18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, (Ephesians 5: 18 – 19).
I didn’t really understand what this passage meant earlier, but if you have seen someone under the influence of alcohol before, you will agree with me that he/she doesn’t have control over his/her self at that very point. It’s like there’s a stronger force controlling him to do what he would ordinarily not do. Some people even believe someone under the influence of alcohol becomes bold and can say or do what he/she is naturally scared of. Interesting, but why would one choose a substance that can destroy one rather than choose the Holy Spirit of God, who has his own personality and can easily relate with one when needed. Someone that can be a friend indeed forever and be confided in.
I have fallen under the influence of the Holy Spirit a couple of times and I tell you, I never regret the outcome, how sweet it is to fall under the influence of someone that can lead you towards things that are productive, rather than to the things you will snap back to face in some couple of minutes. Unlike strong wine, the Holy Spirit leaves a lasting evidence in one’s life and you could never recover from the experience.
I would always say, if I am going to do things out of my mind, let the holy Spirit be the reason behind it. Habits, characters, behavior and so on can all change and change forever by the influence of the Holy Spirit. I have made several turns in my life I couldn’t believe I could, just by the influence of the holy Spirit. He enables one for greater things, rather than render one useless and leave someone worse than before.
It will be the greatest and most beneficial decision in your life if you can take a turn and choose the Holy Spirit today. Yours might not be wine but something else, what really controls your life? Let the Holy Spirit take over.
I bet you will enjoy his leadership every step of the journey. You deserve greater things.
